Termite uses good materials. The deck is good 7-ply maple with a middle-of-the-road concave. The trucks seem light, and don't have the little air bubbles that cheap trucks have in the aluminum casting. The bushings look like polyurethane, and the kingpins are Grind King, which is really good stuff. The bearings are fast, but there is a tiny bit of wheel wobble (I haven't yet found out the exact source of this wobble; it might not be the bearings).
These are more costly than toy-store boards, but they will respond like the boards bigger kids use. Definitely choose the small Termite board if you've got a child under 8 who is seriously interested in learning to ride a skateboard.
